Helping students as role models and mentors
Laura Petersen, a teacher and her business partner wanted to create a tutoring program that did more than just focus on test scores. With today’s headlines about bullying and failing standards in education, they wanted to provide kindergarten through secondary school students, up to age 18 with access to tutors who are also role models and mentors. They started their tutoring business, Student-Tutor, in spring 2012. Student-Tutor recruits high-achieving college students who can connect with their young mentees and provide them with an honest person to relate to and emulate. The tutoring options are personalized to fit each family’s educational needs.
Learning all relevant business skills through HP LIFE training
Laura heard about the HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HP LIFE) program through participation in her local chamber of commerce. The Maricopa Small Business Development Center
, one of twenty HP LIFE training centers in the United States, has been working in close partnership with the Chandler Chamber of Commerce to increase awareness of the HP LIFE program and provide flexible resources that meet the needs of small-business owners.
“The HP series is a great set of courses to help new businesses and people with ideas enter the marketplace and be successful,
” says Laura. “I feel lucky to have stumbled upon these terrific - and free - classes.
Through the HP LIFE training, Laura gained more confidence in using blogs, e-newsletters, Twitter, and Facebook. She also learned about branding, marketing, and how to connect with clients and give them value throughout the entire business-client relationship.
